PS5: Video proves Sony s SSD
A week ago Sony has released the first big firmware update for the PS5. The highlights of the new version include support for M.2 SSDs that can be installed for the expansion of the storage space. In advance, Sony has set up some specifications that the new SSD has to reach to easily play the PS5 games. Among other things, a reading speed of 5500 MB / s and more is recommended.
The Digital Foundry team now wanted to know how the PS5 works with a slightly cheaper SSD that does not match the specifications. The WD BLACK SN750 SE, which offers a read speed of 3500 MB / s, was used here. Normally, the SSD refers to further power via the RAM memory on the PC - but the PS5 does not support this function. The best choice is not the SN750 SE. Nevertheless, the SSD delivered convincing results in the test. Sophisticated games like Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart used as a preliminary example of the new PS5 SSD is almost perfect with the weaker SSD.
At the loading times, the SN750 SE and again could even beat the internal PS5 SSD. Including Cyberpunk 2077 or Control. It became problematic, however, when transferring play data from the internal SSD to the subsequently installed hardware. Here, the SN750 SE needed ten times time to copy the data - in direct comparison with the Sony recommended WD BLACK SN850. Although at the moment a weaker SSD achieves similar results, this could change course in the future. So if you do not want to make any further SSD change in the coming years, should probably choose a model that meets the requirements of Sony.
