ATP-Masters in Madrid: Alexander Zverev fights against Marin Cilic

Nerves kept, achieved experience: tennis Olympic champion Alexander Zverev reached the round of 16 at the Masters in Madrid.

The 25 -year -old defending champion from Hamburg won 4: 6, 6: 4, 6: 4 in the second round against the Croatian Marin Cilic and now meets Sebastian Korda (USA) or Lorenzo Musetti (Italy).

"I just lost the focus in the first set," said Zverev, "but I'm happy about the victory and happy that I got on. Marin is a difficult opponent." He himself "played very well".

Against the US Open winner of 2014, the world number in the world ranking, which had a free time in the first round, increased, especially during the surcharge. An early break in the third round then Zverev brought through. A week earlier in Munich, he failed in his opening match in the later tournament winner Holger Rune (Denmark).

Before the start in Madrid, Zverev had shown himself confidently that his new coach Sergi Bruguera helps him out of the form crisis. He hoped that the two-time French Open winner from Spain will accompany him "for a very long time", Zverev said: "I need a coach, I need leadership."
