Grid Legends: Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 graphic in comparison

Codemasters published with Grid Legends the next entry of the Grid series. The series is characterized by the fact that the player can protect races in different areas (inner sites, overland, race tracks) on staked racetracks.

So there is neither an open-world like Forza Horizon 5 nor exclusively professional racetracks such as Forza Motorsport. Through this feature, grid rises from the competitors in the racing game genre, but how many others also has to prove to the test bench of the technical enthusiasts of Digital Foundry.

Every game, which creates it on the Youtube channel from Digital Foundry, is checked for heart and kidneys. For video games, this means that well-known features are checked, such as resolution , frame rate or loading times , but also more unknown techniques such as the lighting, shadows or reflections.

Grid Legends will be developed in the in-house ego engine and appears for both the latest console generation, as well as for the current. Due to this fact, some techniques have been discussed various compromises in order to achieve the performance target across generations and to realize the best possible gaming experience for everyone.

However, these compromises are barely noticeable in the overall impression. The lighting is controlled, for example, by artificial intelligence , but is preprogrammed to save resources for a better image repetition rate . This is noticeable, for example, when driving through a tunnel and all vehicles of the race at the same time have the reflection of a lamp on the windshield. As already said, there can be little during the playing, because you are focused on yourself and its own vehicle.

However, the compromise pays off at a glance on the pictures per second. You have, more or less the choice, between a balanced standard mode, with the target of a 4K resolution at 60 fps or a 120 fps mode , with reduced resolution and down-controlled shadows and details.

GRID Legends - PlayStation 5 vs Xbox Series X/S - Digital Foundry Tech Review Why only "more or less" the choice because you want to change the modes to the settings of its console and must enable or disable the 120Hz mode. The game unfortunately brings no solution to the menus. In both modes, the frame rates are very stable during the race across platform. Only in the repetitions that are more like an intermediate sequence, there are some losses.

The resolution in these frame rates is, as almost everywhere, dynamic and varies between 1296p and 2160p between 1296P and 2160P and at the Xbox Series X from 1008P to 2160P .

An exception is made at the Xbox Series S , with a targeted resolution of 1440p and varies from 936p to 1440p . However, the lower limits of the resolution are not meaningful for the gaming experience, since both the Xbox Series X, as well as the PlayStation 5 remain predominantly stable at 2160p while sitting at the wheel itself.

According to Digital Foundry, the most impressive on Grid Legends is the weather conditions and night trips . In the rain both day and night, the lighting mechanisms probably best come to validity and let the game "shine". There are also clear differences to the predecessor Grid from 2019.

Especially with racing rows, similarities remain in common, the two games have very similar round-course lists and spectators models. And even if the routes have the same name and the same curves, each route for Grid Legends has been revised, visually adapted and polished.

All in all, Grid Legends is a well-balanced and worthwhile gaming experience that does not talk about any considerable advantage on any console and retains its stable performance itself on the latest generation devices.
